Abstract
Abstract: Efficient mixing, temperature control and small envi-ronmental exposures allow reactions carried out in microfluidic devices to perform superior to their batch-type counterparts in conventional flasks. The Ritter reaction is an example of such a reaction, where hot concentrated sulfuric acid is conventionally used to generate carbocations from alcohols or alkenes, which then react with nitriles to form amides. Amides are important building blocks in synthesis and the hazards involved in the classical reaction can be minimised under microfluidic conditions. We demonstrate how the Ritter reaction can be optimised for flow conditions leading to short reaction times and higher yields and also are more feasable with regards to safety, productivity and tolerance towards substrate functionalities.
