Retrieval and Analysis of Chemical-substance and Patent Information to Support Creation and Selection of Nonproprietary Names: You Can Do It, Too!

D'Ambra, A.J. (2015) Retrieval and Analysis of Chemical-substance and Patent Information to Support Creation and Selection of Nonproprietary Names: You Can Do It, Too! Pharmaceutical Patent Analyst, 4 (4). pp. 241-245. ISSN 2046-8954

Abstract

Pharmaceutical patent analysts can contribute to the creation of generic names, also known as nonproprietary names (NNs), for products in development in their organisations. Retrieval and verification of chemical and patent information related to active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) is an important step in the preparation of requests for NNs. For analysts considering addition of this service to their portfolios, key attributes are a solid foundation in chemistry and patent information searching and interest in and familiarity with the process of creating and selecting NNs. This article provides an overview of the patent and chemical-substance information required in NN requests, with examples of challenges that analysts might encounter in that information and solutions for overcoming them.
