Abstract
This is a video of the symposium "2018 Novartis Open Framework Symposium: Approaches to Fostering Applied Innovation" discussion that took place at NIBR on January 30, 2018. The event was open to the public.
The Novartis Open Framework Symposia are designed to stimulate discussion with the broader scientific community about the academia-industry interface, and how to optimize interactions between these environments in order to advance science and impact health. This session was a sequel to the 2016 symposium on the Role of Academia-Industry Partnerships in Fostering Innovation, and the 2015 panel on Maintaining an Open Mind on Innovation.
This session took place on January 30th, 2018, and focused on Approaches to Fostering Applied Innovation. Novel ideas only become innovative once they are applied and have impact. Foundational scientific research is essential for a better understanding of health related issues, but basic science results by themselves do not improve patients’ lives. It is only once ideas and knowledge are translated into technologies, therapies, and practices that they become the powerful innovations that change the world we live in. At this conference, the speakers presented their experiences with approaches to fostering applied innovation, bringing together imagination, expertise, and resources to translate ideas into reality.
Jay Bradner (President, Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research) opened the meeting. Mary Tolikas (Operations Director, Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University) and Bruce Booth (Partner, Atlas Venture) presented their experiences fostering applied innovation, and steering science towards utility and impact in healthcare. The presentations were followed by a panel discussion.
At this point, there are no plans to use the video in a formal article, but I have requests from academic partners to view the video.
