Abstract
This is for a posting to Recent Updates on the GNF website
For 13 years, IEA (Industrial Environmental Association) has celebrated Earth Day by recognizing local companies with exemplary environmental programs that contribute to the quality of life in San Diego. GNF was selected due to its commitment and focus over the past six years in successfully improving its landfill diversion rate with a variety of waste reduction programs and training sessions executed by the site’s “Green Team.” Researchers at the site have adopted these practices and programs with positive results.
GNF’s current landfill diversion rate is 73%, up from 4.4% in 2010, and it continues to increase as GNF introduces new recycling and source reduction strategies, such as composting, which was introduced in December 2016. The company receives a recycling code for 82% of their hazardous waste, and they have implemented an Orphan Chemical program where they donate unneeded chemicals to universities and small biotechs.
